Need to check a founder before investing

An investment in a project, stake or joint venture is planned. The presentation is convincing, but the decision rests on the founder's personality and track record.

Indicators requiring investigation

  • the success story is not confirmed by independent sources
  • previous projects are closed, sold, or not mentioned
  • the founder avoids questions about past partners
  • the project's ownership structure is more complex than the business requires
  • pressure of urgency: "the window closes this week"

  • how previous projects actually ended
  • whether there are hidden debts, disputes or bankruptcies
  • who owns the project's key assets
  • whether there is a history of conflict with investors

  • documented history of the founder's companies and roles

  • the actual ownership structure of the project
  • public reputational history and the origin of key claims
  • discrepancies between the pitch and verifiable facts

What limitations apply

  • financial data of closed companies is available only from lawful sources
  • the assessment is not an investment recommendation
  • the result does not guarantee the project's success - it reduces the risk of the decision

Can only the founder be checked, without the company?

Yes. But combining the person with the project's structure usually gives a more accurate picture of risk, so the scope is agreed to fit the task.

What if the check finds nothing?

The absence of negative records is also a result: it is recorded together with a list of sources checked and remaining gaps.
