Background Check / People

Background Check

Verification of a person's biography and business history from legal sources: education, career, companies, litigation, debts, public reputation. The purpose is to confirm what is stated and identify material omissions.

01

Practical significance

This is a basic tool for reducing personal risk: before a partnership, hiring for a key role, a major transaction or a power of attorney. A quality background check differs from an automated report by verifying identity and analyzing the context of each finding.

02

Where it is used

  • verification of partners and investors
  • appointments to key positions
  • transactions with private individuals
  • family and personal decisions of high value
03

What the term does not mean

This does not mean access to private life: correspondence, medical records and banking data are not checked. It is a check of a person's public and registry footprint.

04

How it differs from «Checks on a person's circle»

Background Check focuses on the person themselves; a connections check analyzes the circle of contacts and related persons as a source of risk.

05

Illustrative example

Before issuing a power of attorney for asset management, the manager is checked: roles in five companies are confirmed, but two outstanding enforcement proceedings are discovered.
