SIT-09 / Locating people

The location of an individual needs to be established

An individual needs to be found on a lawful basis: an inheritance matter, a family situation, a confirmed debt, litigation, or restoring lost contact with a relative.

01

Indicators requiring investigation

  • contact was lost many years ago
  • the person changed country of residence
  • only outdated information is available
  • confirmation of residence is required for a procedure
02

What is usually unknown

  • which country the person is currently in
  • whether the person is alive and the status of documents
  • how to establish contact correctly
  • what information may be passed to the applicant
03

What may be established

  • current country of stay based on available traces
  • indications of business and public activity
  • family connections within the lawful purpose
  • whether the person is or is not present in registries
  • the correct form of result for the specific procedure
04

Which methods are permitted

  • open sources and archives
  • corporate and court registries
  • work with the applicant's documents
  • requests through authorized persons where provided for
05

What limitations apply

  • a search is not carried out without a lawful basis
  • the interests of the person found are taken into account: contact is not imposed
  • a precise address is provided only where there is a basis

Frequently asked questions

Will you tell the person that they are being searched for?

Only if this is part of an agreed task, for example restoring a family connection. By default, contact is not established.

What if the person is deliberately hiding?

The reason matters. Evading a debt and escaping a threat are assessed differently, and the latter may be grounds for refusal.
