Source of funds and source of wealth

Two different bank questions and how to prepare verifiable answers to both

Updated 3 August 2026 · 8 min read

A bank's refusal citing an "unclear origin of funds" rarely indicates suspicion of wrongdoing. More often it means the client answered the wrong question - confirming a specific payment without explaining how the wealth was formed in the first place. Source of funds and source of wealth are different requirements, and preparation for each follows a different logic.

The guide sets out what is actually accepted as confirmation: which documents settle the question of the origin of money in a transaction, and which settle the history of capital formation over decades. Complex cases are addressed: inheritance without documentation, income earned in a jurisdiction with closed registries, a business sale with no public record, and old assets acquired before current requirements existed.

This material does not replace advice from a lawyer or tax adviser and does not guarantee that a specific bank will approve a transaction.
